Cuz I have both account types but want to delete the Yahoo one yet want to use Y! Answers and that's really it?
Can you register for yahoo with a gmail account?
You must retain the Yahoo email account but you do not have to use it. Just put the Gmail account as the primary account (I do). Go to "My Profile" and "Edit My Info" to change the Y!A email account. You can also go to "My Account" at the top of this page and make your Gmail account the alternate and primary for Yahoo.

It was odd and a new tactic by a company...why such detail required?

It allows them to restrict it to one account per person and a way to verify that the phone number is real and yours. I believe you have to respond with a code that appears on the phone.
Reply:They want to know whether, on your gmail logon screen, they should set you up to offer "gmail mobile"
Reply:To prove you are a real person, not a computer randomly signing up for fake accounts to spam with.

My Gmail registered with LinkedIn just fine when I joined, so I'm not sure why that would be. Are you sure you are typing it in correctly or that you haven't already registered with that email?

Contrary to what everyone is telling you, you don't need an invite, all you need is a phone capable of receiving text messages in order to sign up.
Click on the link below and scroll down and click the link that says "Gmail". Follow the instructions from there.
